Alderman Frank McCoubrey BEM has recently been appointed as the High Sheriff of Belfast for a second time, a significant honour for the dedicated DUP councillor who represents the Court area. This latest appointment means Alderman McCoubrey is now one of only four elected members in the city's history to have held all three top civic titles: Lord Mayor, Deputy Lord Mayor, and High Sheriff.
He was officially sworn into his new role on Tuesday, January 13th, during a special ceremony held at City Hall. Taking over from Councillor Fiona McAteer, Alderman McCoubrey becomes the 126th High Sheriff of Belfast. He previously served in this capacity in 2009, bringing a wealth of experience to the position.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Alderman McCoubrey shared, 'I am delighted to take up the role of High Sheriff once again, and be among a select group of individuals to have completed this civic 'hat trick'.' He added, 'I last wore this chain in 2009 and a lot has changed in our city since then, so I’m looking forward to re-engaging with this role, meeting with groups across the city and helping to showcase all that Belfast has to offer, especially in such a crucial year for visitors to our city.' This commitment to showcasing Belfast will undoubtedly benefit communities across the city, including those here in North Belfast.
Alderman McCoubrey's dedication to public service is well-known. He has been deeply involved in community development in the west of the city for over 30 years and is also an active member of the West Belfast District Policing and Community Safer Partnership. A DUP councillor for 27 years, he received a British Empire Medal (BEM) in June 2024 for his outstanding services to local government and the community, specifically recognising his work in both west and north Belfast.
He will serve as High Sheriff for a full calendar year, joining the city's esteemed team of civic dignitaries, which includes Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tracy Kelly, and Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Paul Doherty. We wish Alderman McCoubrey all the best in his renewed civic role.
