Ardoyne Residents Seek Answers After Police Response to Wednesday Incidents

Concerns have been raised by Ardoyne residents and community representatives following a series of distressing incidents on Wednesday, August 12, including an attack on a local home that is currently being investigated as a racially motivated hate crime.

Alongside the attack on the property, police received reports of a damage-only road traffic collision on Alliance Avenue and reports of masked men on a motorbike operating across the wider area. While officers attended and deployed resources, including a drone, local residents expressed alarm after police reportedly left the area shortly after their arrival due to potential risks to officers.

Independent Councillor Paul McCusker has sought answers regarding the policing response, emphasizing that families and children were left feeling frightened. While acknowledging the importance of officer safety, Councillor McCusker stressed that local residents also deserve protection, visibility, and direct reassurance during serious situations, noting that the deployment of drones alone does not provide sufficient community confidence.

Addressing the community concerns, North Belfast District Commander Superintendent Allister Hagan confirmed that local officers responded to the report of the house being attacked, which is being treated seriously as a racially motivated hate crime. He explained that a police-operated drone was deployed to provide situational awareness and identify investigative opportunities following the related reports.

Superintendent Hagan stated that police responses are prioritized based on threat, risk, and harm assessments, with the ongoing goal of establishing what occurred, protecting the community, and securing evidence to identify those responsible.

Local officers are continuing their enquiries, which include reviewing footage to establish the full circumstances. Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area on Wednesday night or who may have mobile phone, CCTV, doorbell, or dash-cam footage is asked to contact police to assist with the investigation.
