Great news for young women and girls in North Belfast and across the city! has proudly announced its commitment as the first local authority in Northern Ireland to become a champion for the inspiring #NotJustForBoys initiative.
This fantastic campaign, spearheaded by Women's Tec, is all about opening doors and empowering young women to explore and thrive in careers where they have traditionally been underrepresented. Think construction, gardening, transport, and mechanics – sectors bursting with opportunities for skilled individuals.
Councillor Ian McLaughlin, Chair of the Council’s Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, highlighted the campaign’s impact. “The #NotJustForBoys initiative is designed to show young females in schools that careers they might have thought unimaginable are very much within their reach,” he said.
Councillor McLaughlin added, “We’re currently recruiting for painting and decorating apprentices, and this is a brilliant chance for women and girls to enter a highly skilled, rewarding trade right here within the Council. Successful applicants will earn as they learn, gaining a recognised qualification alongside practical experience. As part of our commitment, we will provide the training, a supportive environment, and the mentorship needed for female tradespeople to truly succeed.”
He also noted that introducing girls to technical and trade skills early aligns perfectly with the Council’s Gender Action Plan, aiming to bridge the gender pay gap and promote equality across all Council jobs.
Helen Kerr, Head of Business Development at Women’s Tec, shared her enthusiasm: “We are incredibly proud to welcome as the first council to join us as a #NotJustForBoys Champion. Having the Council stand alongside us is hugely important, not just for the practical support they bring, but for the powerful statement it makes about the importance of gender equality and inclusive opportunities for everyone.”
She emphasised, “Their commitment shows that creating opportunities for women and girls is a collective effort, requiring leadership and action from across our entire community.”
This strategic partnership means the Council will actively support the campaign through practical workplace initiatives. Expect hands-on skills taster sessions and specialised work experience placements within various Council trade departments, giving young women real insight and experience.
If you're a young woman interested in a hands-on career, don't miss out! The Council’s recruitment campaign for apprentice painters and decorators is open until Monday 29 June. It’s a chance to build a rewarding future right here in North Belfast.
