Belfast has just wrapped up an truly unforgettable week as the city proudly hosted Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026 for the very first time, shattering all expectations and setting new records. From Sunday 2 August to Sunday 9 August, our city centre came alive, welcoming an incredible 1,653,999 visitors. This figure more than doubles the initial estimate of 800,000+ visitors, showing just how popular the world’s biggest celebration of Irish music and culture proved to be.
The impact on our city was immense. Compared to the same week last year, Belfast saw an 89% boost in footfall activity. The success here also far outstripped the 2025 Fleadh in Wexford, which welcomed 750,000 people. Public transport use, visitor spending, and hotel occupancy rates all performed exceptionally well, making it a truly record-breaking period for Belfast.
Saturday proved to be the busiest day of the festival, with a staggering 289,560 people recorded in the city centre. This makes it not only the busiest day in the city so far this year but also the busiest since data collection began in 2018. Over 1.7 million passenger journeys were made on public transport during the event, an increase of over 620,000 compared to last year, as residents and visitors embraced advice to use buses, trains, and Park and Ride services.
Our accommodation sector also saw an occupancy rate of 84.6%, with hotels, B&Bs, student accommodation, and short-term lets all bustling. Even the two official Fleadh campsites were at full capacity for the final weekend! While the full economic impact figures are still being calculated, early feedback from hospitality venues has been overwhelmingly positive.
The reach of the Fleadh extended globally, with its website recording two million users, 578,000 of whom visited during the festival week. Over 300 accredited media outlets and journalists helped generate an advertising value equivalent of E13.6 million, spreading the word across local, national, and international audiences.
Behind the scenes, 1,300 dedicated volunteers played a crucial role, distributing 200,000 guides and maps to visitors. Over 5,000 competitors from 22 countries participated in more than 200 competitions. Beyond the main contests, the Fleadh hosted 438 official events, including 107 acts on the main Gig Rig stage. With over 90 venues taking part in the official programme, including more than 50 in our city’s neighbourhoods, the vibrant fringe festival truly brought the Fleadh into every corner of Belfast, making it a celebration for everyone.
