Belfast is preparing to host a monumental event this summer as Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann comes to the city for the very first time! From Sunday, August 2nd to Sunday, August 9th, 2026, our city will be alive with the vibrant sounds and energy of traditional Irish music, song, and dance.
At the heart of the festival will be the Gig Rig, located prominently at Belfast City Hall. This outdoor stage will offer a fantastic lineup of free performances, featuring both well-known acts and exciting new talent, alongside the Fleadh's opening and closing ceremonies. This is a brilliant chance for our local community to get involved, as organisers have launched an open call for artists to perform on this prestigious stage.
If you're a traditional musician, an emerging artist, part of a youth group, a community ensemble, or involved in innovative musical collaborations, now is your chance! Applications are open until January 31st, 2026. You can find out more and apply on www.fleadhcheoil.ie. This is a unique opportunity to showcase North Belfast's diverse talent and be part of a truly historic event.
Beyond the Gig Rig, the Fleadh will utilise a host of iconic Belfast venues. The Ulster Hall and Waterfront Hall will host competitors from across the globe, while the grand ICC Belfast will see top-tier senior céilí bands battle it out. The new Ulster University campus will be home to Scoil Éigse, offering intensive tuition for young musicians, and The MAC will also feature as a key venue.
This festival aims to be an inclusive experience for everyone. Organisers are developing a rich programme of cultural events, working with local organisations and community groups, to celebrate music, arts, and heritage across the city. This will include live music, family-friendly activities, and community-led initiatives.
North Belfast residents can also contribute their creative ideas for the Fleadh through ’s annual Bank of Ideas initiative, with successful suggestions potentially receiving funding. With at least 800,000 visitors expected, engagement sessions will be held between now and spring to provide communities, businesses, and cultural groups with information on how to get involved and plan ahead, including details on potential road closures.
Finally, if you're looking to play a hands-on role in making this event a success, Volunteer Now is recruiting a range of volunteers, with full training provided. Details are also available on www.fleadhcheoil.ie. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to celebrate culture and community right here in Belfast!
