Belfast City Hall was the setting for a poignant commemoration yesterday, as the city gathered to mark the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Hedley Abernethy, led the observance, laying a wreath at the Cenotaph in the Garden of Remembrance. The service remembered the immense sacrifice made by so many brave men from the 36th (Ulster) Division, the 16th (Irish) Division, and other Forces who lost their lives in the 1916 battle.
Belfast City Councillors were in attendance, alongside representatives from both the UK and Irish governments, and members of the Armed Forces, all paying their respects.
