Belfast Sings! Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann Unites City with Music & Fun

Belfast is absolutely buzzing! The highly anticipated Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026 officially opened yesterday, August 2nd, kicking off eight incredible days of traditional Irish music, song, and dance right here in our vibrant city. For the very first time, Belfast has the honour of hosting this prestigious cultural festival, and you can already feel the excitement building across every neighbourhood.

Crowds gathered at Belfast City Hall for the official opening, where the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly, proudly declared the event open for eight days of music, song, and dance. Esteemed guests, including President Catherine Connolly, First Minister Michelle O’Neill MLA, Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly MLA, Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald MLA, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Dr Chris Bryant, along with Dr Labhrás Ó Murchú and Attracta Ní Bhrádaigh from Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, joined musicians, dancers, and local school children for a truly vibrant and colourful display of what's to come.

The Lord Mayor highlighted how the Fleadh is a fantastic opportunity to bring people together, give a boost to our local businesses, create new chances for young people, and strengthen pride in our communities and across the entire city. It's truly a celebration of our shared culture and heritage, echoing through our streets and homes. With over 800,000 visitors expected this week, the Fleadh is one of Europe’s largest cultural events, featuring the very best in traditional Irish music, All-Ireland competitions, activities for all ages, and plenty of community-led initiatives, reflecting Belfast's rich status as a UNESCO City of Music.

The opening ceremony itself was a spectacular showstopper! The main Gig Rig stage at City Hall hosted a special ‘Sharing Traditions’ showcase, bringing together talents from Ards CCÉ, the South Asian Dance Academy, Belfast Bands Forum, Highland pipers, and champion Irish dancers, led by Riverdance star Lauren Smyth. We were particularly proud to see over 100 children from primary and secondary schools across Belfast and North Down perform a powerful rendition of ‘Belfast Belle’ as part of a cross-community choir project – a truly heartwarming moment!

The music is just getting started and will continue every day until Sunday, August 9th! Throughout the week, you can catch performances from famous names and trad royalty like Hothouse Flowers, Annalise Whyte, Ards CCÉ, the Blackwater Céilí Band, Shaer, Moss and Warnock Trio, Goitse, and Sharon Shannon and her Big Band. Beyond the main stage, the city is buzzing with activities. You can find traditional Irish music sessions for children at 2 Royal Avenue, carnival music from the BEATnDRUM samba band at Flaxx Social Space, and explore the official Food and Drink Village at Belfast Cathedral.

Look out for local community events too, including the Super Sunday Session in the Commons on Ormeau Road, special music trails that will guide you from North and South Belfast right into the city centre, alongside heritage tours and dance sessions. This is a landmark moment for Belfast, celebrating 75 years of Comhaltas and promising a legacy that will be felt across our city for years to come.
