Belfast is preparing for an incredible eight days of traditional Irish music, song, and dance as it gets ready to host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann for the very first time! This major cultural event, one of the largest in Europe, will transform our city into a vibrant stage from Sunday, August 2nd to Sunday, August 9th.
Partners across the city, including organisers Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and Ards CCÉ, recently gathered to mark the six-week countdown. They're encouraging everyone – residents, local businesses, and visitors alike – to get ready, get involved, and make the most of the fantastic opportunities the Fleadh will bring to our community.
Anticipating around 800,000 visitors, the city is focused on ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and accessible experience for all. Preparations are extensive, with a strong emphasis on managing increased footfall, public safety, and creating a diverse programme of events.
Getting Around During the Fleadh
To keep Belfast moving smoothly, everyone is encouraged to plan their journeys in advance. With road closures and traffic restrictions expected in the city centre, using public transport and allowing extra time will be key. Our compact, walkable city centre and public transport network will connect all the various Fleadh venues.
For those travelling into the city, three dedicated Park and Ride sites will be available near key arterial routes. Pre-booking for these spaces opens on Monday, July 6th at fleadhcheoil.ie/travel. Clear signage, volunteer support, and up-to-date travel information will be available throughout the week to help you navigate.
A City-Wide Celebration
The Fleadh promises to be a spectacular showcase, with over 200 events planned across various venues and local neighbourhoods. From music sessions and dance performances to cultural activities, All-Ireland competitions, and concerts, there will be something for everyone. The programming is designed to be inclusive, with a focus on family-friendly and accessible events, highlighting Belfast's rich musical stories.
This momentous occasion is also expected to provide a significant boost to Belfast's economy, supporting local businesses, hospitality, and tourism during what will undoubtedly be one of the busiest weeks the city has ever seen. An investment of £1 million from the Department for Economy and Tourism NI is further supporting these preparations.
Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly, shared her excitement: "With six weeks to go, there is real momentum building right across our city, as we prepare to host the Fleadh for the first time. This is a major moment for Belfast, and we are working closely with our partners to ensure the city is ready – from traffic management to public safety, together with a fantastic programme of events and activities which reflect our theme of ‘celebrating together’. I encourage everyone to now plan ahead, get involved and be part of what will be a fantastic week for Belfast."
Labhrás Ó Murchú, Ardstiúrthóir of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, added: "As Belfast prepares to host visitors from across Ireland and around the world, we look forward to a week that will showcase the very best of traditional music, song and dance, while creating new friendships, lasting memories and a warm welcome for everyone who attends."
