Exciting news for North Belfast! Belfast Zoo has officially welcomed three gorgeous new residents to our local landmark on Cavehill. On Friday, 17th July 2026, the zoo announced the arrival of three male Northern lions named Djibo, Kumo, and Mao, who are now settling into their new home.
The arrival of these three marks an important and thrilling new chapter for Belfast Zoo and its vital international conservation work. Northern lions are a remarkable species, and having them right here in North Belfast highlights the zoo's ongoing commitment to protecting vulnerable wildlife.
To ensure the new arrivals have a stress-free transition, the lion habitat is temporarily closed to the public today while Djibo, Kumo, and Mao explore and get comfortable in their new surroundings. The zoo team has thanked the public for their patience and looks forward to welcoming visitors back to catch a glimpse of the majestic trio very soon.
