Belfast’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly, recently took to the streets with our city’s dedicated Safer Neighbourhood Officers, getting a direct look at their vital work. Ahead of what promises to be a bustling summer, the Lord Mayor joined the team as they carried out their daily rounds, focusing on maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for everyone in Belfast.
During the patrol, Councillor Donnelly learned about the strong collaborative spirit behind the SNOs' efforts. They work closely with a range of partners including the PSNI, Extern, the Welcome Organisation, SOS NI, and Business Improvement Districts. This united approach ensures that our city remains a secure and pleasant place for residents, workers, and visitors alike.
These dedicated officers play a crucial role across Belfast, not just in the city centre but also in our neighbourhood parks, and they provide support at major events like Belsonic. Their duties are diverse, from addressing anti-social behaviour and handling concerns from residents and businesses, to signposting vulnerable individuals towards essential services for homelessness or addiction issues. With a team of ten officers working various shift patterns, they provide a visible and reassuring presence right across our community.
With a summer calendar packed with events, including numerous cruise ship visits and music concerts, and the upcoming Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann from August 2nd to 9th, the SNO team will be more active than ever. Regular foot patrols will intensify, especially within the event zones, ensuring visitors feel safe and supported, while continuing to assist our most vulnerable residents.
Councillor Donnelly shared her insights from the patrol, stating, “The walkaround highlighted the wide range of challenges facing our city, but it was also incredibly reassuring. Our Safer Neighbourhood Officers are truly invested in their jobs and passionate about making a positive difference in Belfast. Their commitment shines through in their work and the strong relationships they've built with our city partners and residents.” She emphasised the collaborative role with housing, healthcare, and policing partners to ensure a safe and welcoming city for everyone, especially supporting those most vulnerable.
Thanks to their dedicated assistance, many people facing challenging circumstances are now receiving crucial support through the 'Complex Lives' initiative. This program sees various agencies working together, providing comprehensive assistance to vulnerable individuals at every step of their journey.
As we look forward to a busy summer, the invaluable work of our Safer Neighbourhood team and their city partners is essential in fostering a sense of welcome and ensuring a safe experience for all. We extend our sincere thanks to them for their unwavering dedication and commitment to our community.
