Belfast is buzzing with anticipation as Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann draws near, and at the heart of this excitement are over 1,300 dedicated volunteers. These incredible individuals have registered to be the welcoming faces and helping hands for one of Europe's biggest cultural festivals, showcasing the vibrant community spirit right here in our city.
Set to take over Belfast from Sunday 2 to Sunday 9 August, the eight-day event will see these volunteers, managed by Volunteer Now, play a crucial role. Hailing from Belfast, across Ireland, and even further afield, this diverse network is currently undergoing training and orientation sessions throughout July, getting ready to make visitors, musicians, and competitors feel truly at home.
From greeting people at transport hubs to helping them navigate our city streets, supporting competitions, and assisting with fringe events in local neighbourhoods and Scoil Égise music tuition classes, the Fleadh volunteers will be everywhere. Easily identifiable in their bright yellow T-shirts and hats, they'll also champion sustainability as waste and recycling experts, work behind the scenes as venue runners, and ensure everyone has access to vital information and facilities.
Councillor Ian McLaughlin, Chair of the council’s Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, highlighted their vital role, stating, “Our volunteers will be the heartbeat of the Fleadh – the ‘event makers’ helping to bring this huge event to life. With more than 1,300 people now fully registered, they demonstrate the enthusiasm, generosity, and civic pride that exists across Belfast, and we’re grateful to each of them for their time, effort, and contribution.” He added, “Their warmth, knowledge, and commitment will help showcase our city at its very best and ensure everyone who comes to the Fleadh will receive the warm welcome we are famous for.”
Beyond contributing to a massive cultural event, volunteering offers a wealth of personal benefits. Denise Hayward, Chief Executive of Volunteer Now, commented, “Through volunteering, people have the opportunity to develop new skills, gain valuable experience, build confidence, and make lasting friendships with others who share a passion for music, culture, and community. We are delighted to see so many people stepping forward to get involved and are confident that the friendships, skills, and experiences they gain will stay with them long after the Fleadh has ended.”
While all main volunteer spaces for this year’s Fleadh are now allocated, a reserve list is still open for registration should additional support be needed. If you're keen to be part of this incredible experience, you can sign up via the Fleadh Cheoil website at fleadhcheoil.ie/volunteer. For those looking ahead, registrations for the 2027 event will open later in August.
