Good news for community safety and fair living across Belfast! Recent successful prosecutions in Belfast Magistrates’ Court highlight the ongoing commitment to protecting residents from harm and upholding essential laws. These cases showcase local efforts to ensure businesses comply with health regulations and landlords treat tenants fairly, with one case directly impacting North Belfast.
In the first instance, the owner of Sahara Shisha, a cafe located on Botanic Avenue, faced penalties for failing to prevent smoking within his premises. Mr. Mesut Savcun pleaded guilty and was fined a total of £1350, alongside £79 in costs, for breaching smoke-free legislation under The Smoking (Northern Ireland) Order 2006. This prosecution followed repeated visits from Tobacco Control Officers, who on five occasions observed people smoking shisha in the enclosed space. It's a vital reminder that smoking in enclosed public spaces is against the law, protecting both workers and the public from the dangers of second-hand smoke.
Closer to home, a landlord was fined £250 for illegally evicting a tenant from accommodation right here in North Belfast, on Oranmore Street. Patrick Brady was also ordered to pay £78 in costs after unlawfully removing his tenant. This successful prosecution is a crucial reminder that local authorities have powers to investigate complaints about landlord harassment or illegal evictions and will take action to protect tenants' rights. If you're a tenant or landlord, it's always worth being aware of your rights and responsibilities to ensure good practice and fair housing for everyone in our community.
These outcomes demonstrate a clear commitment to fostering a safe and just environment for all Belfast residents. Whether it's ensuring healthy public spaces or safeguarding housing rights, these actions play a vital role in our community's well-being.
