Nestled right here in North Belfast, the iconic stands as a powerful testament to our city's complex past. Dating back to 1845, this formidable Victorian prison served as a working gaol until 1996. After extensive, sensitive renovations, it has been brilliantly repurposed, reopening its doors not only as a fascinating visitor attraction but also as a modern conference centre and a versatile venue for a wide array of community events, concerts, and even weddings.
Today, locals and visitors alike can embark on an immersive ' Experience' tour, journeying through its storied history. You'll learn about the diverse individuals held within its walls, from women and children in its early days to the politically segregated prisoners of later eras, and understand the significant reasons behind its eventual closure. The tour takes you through the underground tunnel that once linked the Gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, offers panoramic views of the prison wings from the central circle, and includes poignant visits to the condemned man’s cell and the execution chamber, where 17 men met their fate.
