Downpatrick is set to receive a significant boost with Asda confirming plans for a brand new, state-of-the-art superstore. This multi-million-pound investment signals a strong commitment to the local community, promising an upgraded shopping experience for residents.
The new store will be built on the site of the original Asda in Ballydugan Retail Park, which was unfortunately damaged beyond repair by storms in November 2023. Since then, a temporary, smaller store has been serving the community, proving to be a vital lifeline. Now, following the signing of contracts with site owner Celpark Ltd, the much-anticipated rebuild can begin in earnest.
This isn't just a replacement; it's a major upgrade. The new superstore is planned to be 20% larger than the original, offering considerably more floor space and an expanded range of products. Shoppers can also look forward to a brand new Petrol Filling Station and improved office and colleague facilities, adding greater value for everyone.
Michael McFadden, Senior Director for Asda NI, shared the positive news, stating, “Today marks another important milestone for our business in Downpatrick. We are thrilled to share this great news with our colleagues, customers, and the wider community.” He emphasized that the new store will be “a flagship standard that will serve this community for decades to come,” bringing much-needed investment and increased footfall to Downpatrick and the surrounding area. Colleagues in Downpatrick were among the first to be informed, a testament to Asda's appreciation for their hard work and resilience during challenging times.
The extensive project involves the demolition of the existing building and significant investment in groundworks, including piling design. Celpark’s contractors will work diligently to minimise disruption during this complex rebuild. While acknowledging potential challenges, Asda hopes to celebrate the grand opening in Spring 2027. The temporary store will continue to operate throughout the construction period, with plans to transition operations overnight to the new store to ensure continuous trade.
McFadden extended thanks to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and all local stakeholders for their support in making this significant project possible. “We've navigated the challenges of the last few years and are now on the pathway to our fantastic new home,” he concluded, looking forward to a bright future for Asda in Downpatrick.
