Belfast is buzzing with excitement as it prepares to host the Comhaltas Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the world's largest celebration of Irish music, language, song, and dance. While this promises a fantastic atmosphere for everyone, businesses located within the pedestrianised event zone in the city centre need to be aware of temporary arrangements in place from Sunday 2 to Sunday 9 August.
To ensure a safe and welcoming environment for the thousands of visitors expected, vehicle traffic will be restricted in a large part of the city centre. This means it's crucial for all businesses – from your local newsagent to pharmacies, hairdressers, and banks – to plan ahead for how this might affect your operations, staff, and customers.
Key areas to consider include receiving essential deliveries, managing staff travel, ensuring customer access, and arranging commercial waste collections. If you haven't yet thought about these arrangements, now is the time to get organised and apply for the necessary access passes.
To help you prepare, further online information sessions are scheduled for Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 July, with various time slots available. These sessions are a great opportunity to understand the plans and ask any questions you might have. You can find a map of the affected zone and sign up for these sessions on the fleadh website.
An Accreditation and Logistics Hub will be set up at Duncrue Street, operating 24/7 throughout the eight-day event. This hub will be the central point for managing all vehicle access into the pedestrianised zone, including food and drink deliveries, emergency services, postal services, and waste collections. Most deliveries and waste collections will take place overnight, between 4am and 8am, and must be completed by 9am daily. All vehicles entering the zone will require a pass in advance from the hub.
The hub will also offer temporary refrigeration and storage facilities for those who need them. While many businesses have already received their access passes, there's still time to apply if you haven't completed the process yet. Officials are emphasizing the importance of planning ahead and being prepared, encouraging businesses to work with their suppliers and delivery companies now to avoid any disruptions.
Changes to the council's commercial waste service for city centre businesses will also be in effect during the Fleadh, with direct notifications sent to customers regarding rescheduled times.
Beyond logistics, local businesses can also get into the Fleadh spirit with free 'Fleadh friendly' resources! A toolkit including colourful window stickers, posters, and bunting is available to help you welcome visitors, advertise special offers, and create a vibrant atmosphere for musicians. Links to download these assets, along with a business toolkit packed with additional planning information, can be found on the fleadh website. Don't forget to check the website for more details on access passes and how to apply, or email the team directly at [email protected] to arrange a chat.
