Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann Arrives! Get Ready to Celebrate in Belfast!

Belfast is buzzing with anticipation as it prepares to host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026, the world's largest celebration of traditional Irish music and culture! From Sunday, August 2nd to Sunday, August 9th, our city will be transformed into a giant stage, inviting everyone to "Celebrate Together" during this historic week.

The festivities kick off officially this Sunday, August 2nd, from 12 noon, with a spectacular, free opening event at City Hall. Head to the main Gig Rig stage outside City Hall to witness the specially commissioned ‘Sharing Traditions’ showcase, featuring local musicians from Ards CCÉ and the Belfast Bands Forum, alongside performers from Arts Ekta and the South Asian Dance Academy. A 130-strong choir of school pupils from Belfast and North Down will also perform, giving a fantastic taste of what's to come. The opening ceremony will be packed with energetic performances from trad and folk favourites like the Blackwater Céilí Band, Goitse, and the Shaer, Moss and Warnock Trio. The legendary Sharon Shannon and her Big Band will top the bill from 8pm, ensuring a memorable start to the festival.

Throughout the week, music will fill every corner of Belfast. The Gig Rig at City Hall will host free music daily from morning until late evening, showcasing headline acts and trad icons such as Sí Fiddlers and Lúnasa. Many events are free, but some special performances, including intimate shows with artists like Kate Nash, Ryan McMullan, and Foy Vance as part of the Fleadh Fringe, will be ticketed. You can also join open-air céilís at City Hall on Friday, August 7th, and Saturday, August 8th, at 3pm. Musicians travelling to Belfast are encouraged to bring their instruments, with seven pop-up session spaces across the city – including 2 Royal Avenue, Castle Place, and Donegall Quay – designed for spontaneous acoustic opportunities.

This is truly a festival for all ages. Families can enjoy a huge range of activities, from children’s trad trails and storytelling inspired by Irish and Ulster-Scots folklore, to circus and carnival performances and Irish dancing displays. There will be daily youth seisiúns, family recitals, and a dedicated space at Castle Place for arts and crafts and street entertainers. Refuel at the Food Village at Belfast Cathedral, or explore the Irish Language Hub at the MAC for family entertainment, films, and circus skills delivered through Irish.

As dusk falls, the Fleadh comes alive with a packed fringe festival. A firm favourite, the Trisco (trad disco), returns to the Limelight on Friday, August 7th, alongside an energetic performance from the multi-award-winning trio Talisk. Look out for ticketed performances at venues like the Waterfront Hall and Ulster Hall, and don't miss Late Night Art on Thursday, August 6th, as venues across the city embrace the Fleadh atmosphere with their own independent events. To help everyone get home safely, additional late-night bus and rail services will be available on Sunday, August 2nd, and again from Thursday, August 6th, to Sunday, August 9th.

Beyond the incredible music, there’s a wealth of other cultural events to explore. Learn about Belfast’s harping heritage through lectures, discover how instruments are made at Belfast Met, or check out art exhibitions celebrating trad musicians. Historic venues like St Joseph’s Church in Sailortown, Clifton House, and Friar’s Bush Graveyard are all hosting events, alongside our city’s libraries, galleries, and museums, spreading the festival feel right across Belfast's communities.

North Belfast residents, get ready to dive into the celebrations! Our area will host fantastic events including heritage tours and the North Block Night Market on Friday, August 7th. Don't miss performances at Caifé Ceoil at Áras Mhic Reachtain. On Thursday, August 6th, a special Beyond Skin showcase will bring unique sounds from musicians from Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, celebrating Persian, Kurdish, and Celtic connections right here in North Belfast.

The grand finale will take place on Sunday, August 9th, with an energetic performance from the 2026 Senior Céilí Band winners on the main City Hall Gig Rig stage, rounding off a truly historic week for Belfast.
