Belfast is buzzing with excitement as it prepares to host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann for the very first time this August! From Sunday, August 2nd to Sunday, August 9th, our city will be transformed into the world's biggest celebration of Irish music and culture, welcoming an incredible 800,000 visitors. Get ready to experience a vibrant week-long festival right here on our doorsteps, showcasing the rich tapestry of Irish heritage.
At the heart of this spectacular event will be the dedicated Irish Language Hub, located at The MAC. This hub is set to be a welcoming space for everyone, from fluent speakers and lifelong learners to those who are curious about the Irish language for the first time. Throughout the week, you can enjoy free daily Irish language taster classes, provided by Ulster University, alongside a relaxed 'tea and conversation' area and a dedicated family room. It's a fantastic opportunity to hear, use, and experience Gaeilge in a fun, practical setting.
The programme at The MAC is packed with diverse activities. Expect daily traditional music sessions, lively family entertainment, creative arts and craft workshops, rejuvenating yoga sessions, and even thrilling circus skills. There will also be community conversations exploring various topics. Film enthusiasts will be delighted with screenings of acclaimed Irish language films such as Mise Éire, Róise & Frank, and the award-winning An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl). Talks and discussions will delve into language, heritage, and cultural identity, featuring contributions from universities, community groups, and cultural experts. Don't miss the Belfast history walk led by Professor Fionntánn de Brú, exploring the city's Irish language past, plus live broadcasts from Raidió Fáilte, and workshops focusing on inclusion and community participation.
Beyond The MAC, the Fleadh embraces Belfast’s rich diversity with events celebrating Ulster-Scots language and traditions at the Corn Exchange on Gordon Street. Look out for major performances like 'Sharing Traditions' at City Hall (Sunday, August 2nd), the 'Ulster Bands' showcase at the Titanic Slipways (Thursday, August 6th), and 'Connections' back at City Hall (Friday, August 7th), bringing together artists from various cultural backgrounds. The festival encourages everyone to 'celebrate together' with highlights including Mexican dancing at Saltwater Square and a Beat Carnival showcase at FLAXX on Brunswick Street (both Sunday, August 2nd), a fascinating talk on traditional music's 'orange and green' by Gary Hastings at Linenhall Library (Thursday, August 6th), and a concert exploring Persian, Kurdish, and Celtic connections (Thursday, August 6th).
The excitement isn't confined to the city centre! Over 90 neighbourhood events are planned across Belfast as part of the Fleadh fringe programme, ensuring the festival's energy reaches local communities. This fantastic fringe programme is already underway, kicking off with an evening of Gaelic song at Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich on Friday, July 17th, a performance from John Spillane, Lorraine Nash and guests on Saturday, July 18th, and the first of a series of free, family-friendly community gatherings – the Super Sunday Session East at Skainos on Sunday, July 19th.
As Belfast’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly, shared, "Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the Irish language as a living, vibrant part of our city and our shared cultural heritage. The dedicated hub at The MAC will create a welcoming space for everyone, offering countless opportunities to experience the language in an accessible and enjoyable way, and celebrating its central role within the overall Fleadh experience."
