Fleadh Cheoil is Coming! Keeping Our City Centre Spick and Span

Belfast is buzzing with excitement as Comhaltas Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann approaches, set to transform our city centre into a vibrant hub of music and culture from Sunday, August 2nd to Monday, August 10th. With over 800,000 visitors expected throughout the week, ensuring our streets remain clean, tidy, and welcoming is a top priority for everyone involved.

To manage the anticipated crowds and maintain our city's appearance, comprehensive waste collection and overnight cleansing plans have been put in place. A significant change for the event will see many city centre roads closed to vehicle traffic from 5 am on Sunday, August 2nd, until 7 am on Monday, August 10th. This creates a safe and enjoyable pedestrian zone for everyone to soak in the atmosphere across various streets and venues. While buses will continue to operate around the zone, other vehicle access, including commercial waste collections and business deliveries, will be restricted. These essential services will now operate during an early morning window, between 4 am and 8 am, during the event period.

Instead of regular street bins, 40 new on-street recycling stations will be available to encourage visitors to sort their waste responsibly, with separate compartments for mixed dry recycling, food waste, and general waste. An additional 200 general waste bins will also be placed at key high-footfall locations. Friendly volunteers will be on hand to help guide event-goers to their nearest bin station. Ten dedicated bin hubs will be strategically located across the city centre, allowing operatives to efficiently clear bins as they fill up throughout the day. All collected rubbish will then be taken away for recycling overnight.

The commitment to cleanliness extends into the night. Heavy service vehicles will be cleaning and clearing the pedestrianised event zone through the night, ensuring it's fresh for the next day's activities. Dedicated night-time crews will sweep and maintain the city centre from 11 pm to 7 am each evening, using enhanced resources and coordinated routes to ensure the area is refreshed and ready for visitors daily.

For local businesses, commercial waste providers supporting licensed premises and other venues must complete their services within the early morning access window, using specific access routes to minimise spills and disruptions. Any necessary power-washing will conclude the overnight cleansing programme. For council-managed commercial waste collections, services will take place between 2 am and 6 am the morning after the usual collection day, from Monday, August 3rd, to Saturday, August 8th, with normal service resuming on Monday, August 10th.

Residents living inside the event zone will also experience some changes, and further information is available on relevant websites. For those living outside the city centre, all household and commercial waste collections will operate as normal. We ask all residents to follow guidance on presenting their bins correctly to help keep our streets and communities clean and tidy. Remember, reports of fly-tipping and illegal dumping can still be made online, and there's also advice for residents and local businesses on supporting clean streets, including details of free community clean-up initiatives.

Beyond the cleansing efforts, our Environmental Education and Outreach team will host free, family-friendly sustainability workshops at 2 Royal Avenue and Castle Place. We all want Belfast to look its best during the Fleadh and to show our city at its finest. With additional staff, extra street bins with a strong recycling focus, specialised bin hubs to manage the flow of waste during the day and into the evening, and a dedicated delivery and waste collection window to support businesses, we’re putting the infrastructure in place to make that possible. Everyone can play their part too by binning their waste, keeping our streets, neighbourhoods and premises tidy, following the arrangements that have been put in place, and supporting our crews as they go about their vital work."
