Get ready, North Belfast! The world's biggest celebration of Irish music and culture, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, is making its way to Belfast this August. From August 2nd to 9th, 2026, our city will transform into a vibrant hub of traditional arts, welcoming over 800,000 visitors. For the first time ever, Belfast is the host city, and preparations are well underway to ensure an unforgettable experience for everyone.
A central part of the Fleadh experience will be a warm embrace of the Irish language, inviting fluent speakers, learners, and newcomers alike. You'll see bilingual signage and festive decorations across the city, creating an immersive atmosphere. At the heart of this will be Mol na Gaeilge (The Irish Language Hub) located at The MAC, set to be a hive of activity throughout the week.
The Mol na Gaeilge hub promises a fantastic programme of language, music, arts, culture, and community events. Daily free Irish taster classes, run by Ulster University, are perfect for those curious about the language. There'll be a welcoming 'tea and chat' corner, a dedicated family room, daily traditional music sessions, family entertainment, arts and crafts workshops, yoga, and even circus skills! Film buffs can enjoy screenings of Irish cinema like 'Mise Éire', 'Róise & Frank', and 'An Cailín Ciúin', alongside insightful talks and discussions on language and heritage.
Belfast's Lord Mayor, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly, shared her excitement, stating: “Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann offers a wonderful chance to celebrate the Irish language as a living, vibrant part of our city and shared cultural heritage. The dedicated hub at The MAC will create a welcoming space for everyone, from fluent speakers to those just starting their journey with the language. Through music, film, conversation, family activities, and cultural events, visitors will have an enjoyable and accessible way to experience Irish.”
Beyond the Irish Language Hub, the Fleadh embraces Belfast's rich tapestry of cultures. The Corn Exchange on Gordon Street will host events celebrating Ulster-Scots language and traditions, with performances like 'Sharing Traditions' and 'Ulster Bands'. You can also catch Mexican dance at Saltwater Square, a dynamic Beat Carnival display at FLAXX on Brunswick Street (both on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026), and a fascinating talk by Gary Hastings on the 'orange and green' of traditional music at Linenhall Library (Thursday, August 6th, 2026). And for something truly unique, will host a concert on Thursday, August 6th, 2026, exploring connections between Persian, Kurdish, and Celtic cultures – a real treat for our North Belfast community!
But the Fleadh isn't just confined to the city centre; a fantastic fringe programme of over 90 community events is planned across Belfast, with significant input from our very own North Belfast. Local arts and community groups are collaborating to bring you a diverse calendar of activities leading up to, during, and after the main festival. This exciting fringe programme kicks off this weekend! Join events at Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich this Friday, July 17th, 2026. On Saturday, July 18th, 2026, will host a concert featuring John Spilanne, Lorraine Nash, and guests. And on Sunday, July 19th, 2026, don't miss the Super Sunday Session East at Skainos.
This is a fantastic opportunity for North Belfast residents to enjoy world-class culture right on our doorstep and celebrate our shared heritage. For full programme details and to plan your visit, head over to fleadhcheoil.ie. Don't miss out!
