Get ready, North Belfast! The biggest celebration of Irish music and culture, Comhaltas Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, is coming to Belfast for the very first time this summer, from Sunday, August 2nd to Sunday, August 9th. With around 800,000 people expected to descend on our city over eight days, extensive traffic and travel plans have been put in place to ensure everyone can move around safely and easily, making the most of this incredible event. The key message is clear: plan your journey, allow extra time, and swap your car for public transport, walking, or cycling!
A major change for the Fleadh will be the pedestrianisation of Belfast city centre, creating a safe and welcoming event zone for all the festivities. While this will create an amazing atmosphere, it means driving through the city centre will be strongly discouraged due to road closures and diversions. You'll see directional signage appearing across the city from today to help guide you. Whether you're attending Fleadh events, working in the city, or just visiting, planning ahead is essential.
Public transport will be your best friend during the Fleadh! All Translink Ulsterbus, Metro, and Glider services will operate as normal, with any minor alterations to bus stops easily found online at translink.co.uk/fleadh or via the Translink Journey Planner app. NI Railways will run a revised timetable with enhanced capacity to accommodate both Fleadh visitors and regular commuters. Expect services to be busy, so consider contactless payment for speed and convenience, and always allow extra time for your journey.
For those travelling into Belfast from outside the city, or who need to drive closer to the city limits, three dedicated Park & Ride sites will be available. These are located at the Eikon Exhibition Centre (convenient for M1 users), Giant’s Park (near the M2), and Belfast Harbour (close to the M3). These services are highly encouraged to reduce city centre traffic. Pre-booking your space is strongly advised and will be available from Monday, July 6th, via fleadhcheoil.ie/travel. There will be a charge of £10 per day per site, but a free, fully accessible shuttle bus service will run regularly from each site to either Grand Central Station or Laganside Bus Centre.
Making the Fleadh accessible for everyone is a priority. Arrangements include coaches operating from Linenhall Street, two dedicated car parks for blue badge holders (pre-booked with Park & Ride), and designated taxi pick-up and drop-off points around the event zone. Additionally, a free, fully accessible city centre loop shuttle bus will operate daily for those with accessibility needs or carrying heavy instruments. For visitors staying at the official campsites – Titanic Quarter, Ormeau Park, and Falls Park – they are all conveniently located close to main public transport routes or just an easy walk to the city centre. Most Fleadh events are within a 15-minute walk of Belfast city centre.
City centre businesses will also have specific arrangements in place. Deliveries during the Fleadh will be facilitated via an overnight window from 4am to 8am. A 24/7 Accreditation and Logistics Hub will coordinate stock replenishment, waste collections, and other key services. Information on booking delivery slots and obtaining access passes is being shared directly with affected premises, including shops, pharmacies, and banks. The Police Service of Northern Ireland will also have an increased visible presence across the city to ensure public safety and deter criminal activity, working closely with transport partners.
Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly, urges everyone to play their part: "Hosting Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann will bring significant crowds, and we want everyone to enjoy it with minimal disruption. Pedestrianising the city centre will create that fantastic festival atmosphere. Our message is simple – don’t drive into the city centre during the Fleadh. Instead, walk, cycle, or use public transport, and always allow extra time. If you're travelling in, pre-book your Park & Ride or take the bus or train. By working together and following this advice, we can ensure everyone moves with the rhythm of the Fleadh and makes this a truly memorable event for Belfast!" Volunteers will also be on hand at key locations like Grand Central Station to help you navigate with ease.
