Fleadh Cheoil Roars On: Record Crowds, Road Closures, & Fun for All!

Belfast is absolutely buzzing this week as Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann transforms our city centre into a vibrant hub of traditional music, dance, and culture! The opening weekend proved to be an unprecedented success, drawing record-breaking crowds and making Sunday, August 2nd, the busiest day the city core has seen all year.

Footfall figures show an incredible 176,464 people flocked to the city centre on Sunday – a huge 95% increase compared to the same day last year. This attendance even surpassed previous major events like St Patrick’s Day, Belfast Pride, and last year’s Culture Night. Monday, August 3rd, saw continued high numbers with 165,077 visitors, marking a 75% increase from last year. These figures highlight the incredible turnout for the event, with over 800,000 visitors anticipated across the eight days.

To ensure everyone can move around safely and fully enjoy the expanded festivities, organisers have announced further road closures. From 5 am on Wednesday, August 5th, until the event concludes on Sunday evening, Wellington Place, Donegall Square North, Donegall Square East, and Donegall Square West will be closed to all traffic. This extends the pedestrianised zone right around City Hall, allowing more space for people to enjoy the atmosphere. Please note that Donegall Square South and the lower end of Chichester Street will remain open.

These changes mean there will be some adjustments to Translink pick-up and drop-off points, along with service diversions. If you're using public transport, we encourage you to follow the advice of staff and volunteers, check the Translink website and Journey Planner app for updates, plan your journey ahead, and allow extra time as services are expected to be busy. For those using public hire taxis, new ranks are available on Upper Arthur Street and leading back onto Chichester Street. Pedestrians are also reminded to use designated crossings and follow the directions of event stewards.

The good news is there’s still so much to see, do, and taste! Our local businesses, artisans, and traders are truly showcasing the best of Belfast. Don't miss the official Food and Drink Village in the grounds of Belfast Cathedral, open daily with local producers and family-friendly vibes (until 8 pm Tuesday/Wednesday, and 10 am - 11 pm Thursday to Sunday). St George’s Market is also open all week, with extended hours from Thursday to Sunday (10 am - 10 pm). Smithfield Market has extended its trading until 9 pm on Thursday and Friday, with an extra opening on Sunday, August 9th (1 pm - 6 pm).

For even more treats, the Craic and Craft Market at ICC Belfast offers artisan food and family entertainment (until 5 pm Wednesday, and 10 am - 10 pm Thursday to Sunday). Additionally, around 100 businesses have set up shop along High Street, Bridge Street, and Royal Avenue, offering hot food, crafts, and souvenirs. Many independent cafés, restaurants, bars, and pop-up venues are joining in the fun with special Fleadh taster menus, promotions, live music spaces, and late-night options.

With five more days of celebration, including the highly anticipated All-Ireland competitions kicking off on Friday and running until Sunday – traditionally the busiest days of the Fleadh – there's still plenty of time to soak up the incredible atmosphere.
