Belfast recently buzzed with a truly inspiring event as the Comhaltas Gradam Inclusion Awards took centre stage at The MAC. These special awards, a core part of the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, shine a spotlight on traditional Irish musicians with additional needs, ensuring that the vibrant festival of music and culture remains welcoming and accessible to everyone in our community.
The uplifting event on Monday 3 August was a heartwarming display of talent and passion. Award recipients captivated the audience with solo and group performances, ranging from soulful songs and energetic set dancing to skilled playing of traditional Irish instruments such as the bodhrán and tin whistle. The atmosphere was one of pure joy and celebration, highlighting the incredible abilities and dedication of each musician.
The importance of these awards was underscored by the presence of several distinguished guests. Among those attending were the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly; President Catherine Connolly; First Minister Michelle O’Neill MLA; Communities Minister Gordon Lyons MLA; and Dr Labhrás Ó Murchú and Attracta Ní Bhrádaigh from Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. Their attendance further emphasised the community-wide support for inclusivity in traditional Irish music and culture, making it a proud moment for Belfast.
