North Belfast Barber Jay Millar Reflects on Miraculous Recovery One Year On

Local barber Jay Millar is celebrating a remarkable recovery one year after a life-threatening seizure left him in intensive care. Now back at work and serving the community, Jay shares his journey of resilience and gratitude.

North Belfast barber Jay Millar is reflecting on a life-changing year, marking the first anniversary of a traumatic seizure that left him fighting for his life. On April 20, 2025, while driving to his shop on Seaview Street, Jay began to feel unwell. After pulling over to safety, he suffered a seizure and fell, striking his head on the kerb. Thanks to the quick actions of a passing Good Samaritan, he was rushed to the hospital.

Jay spent three weeks in a medically induced coma at the Royal Victoria Hospital ICU, undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. Doctors were faced with multiple brain traumas, and at one point, it was uncertain if he would ever speak again. However, after a long road to recovery and what Jay describes as a miracle, he has defied the odds to return to the career and community he loves.

Today, Jay is back behind the chair as a barber and has expanded his reach by teaching and working as an ambassador for Booksy. He recently attended a major industry event, a milestone that seemed impossible just twelve months ago. Reflecting on his journey, Jay expressed deep gratitude for the support of his family and his faith, noting that he has learned to slow down and appreciate life more.

His story is one of incredible resilience and a reminder of the strength within our North Belfast community. As Jay continues his outreach work and grows his business, his message to his neighbours is simple: look after yourself, cherish your loved ones, and never lose hope even in the most uncertain times.
