King Charles and Queen Camilla brought a touch of royal glamour to Belfast on 19 May 2026, enjoying an exclusive preview of what promises to be one of the city's biggest cultural events: Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann! This August, Belfast will proudly host the world's largest celebration of Irish music and culture for the very first time, and Their Majesties were here to get a flavour of the excitement.
The royal couple stopped by the historic Pumphouse in the Titanic Quarter, where they were greeted by Belfast's Lord Mayor, Councillor Tracy Kelly, and Chief Executive John Walsh. They also met with talented players from Ards CCÉ, who are collaborating with the council to bring this incredible festival to life. The atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation for the eight-day event, which is expected to draw a massive 800,000 visitors to our city!
The visit kicked off with a lively rendition of 'I'll Tell Me Ma' by Ards CCÉ and members of the Belfast Bands Forum, setting a joyful tone. Against the iconic backdrop of the Harland and Wolff cranes, a mini 'Fleadh village' showcased Belfast's rich cultural tapestry. Polish and Ukrainian dancers added a splash of colour, while musicians from Kurdish, Mexican, and African traditions, playing their unique instruments, highlighted the city's vibrant diversity – a true cornerstone of Belfast's Fleadh Cheoil programme.
At the special 'musicians' corner', King Charles and Queen Camilla met 14-year-old Seamus McClean, an All-Ireland champion on the uilleann pipes, who captivated them with his skill. Local Comhaltas members then gave a fantastic demonstration of other traditional Irish instruments, including the rhythmic bodhrán, the lively tin whistle, and the beautiful fiddle. The highlight for many was seeing King Charles himself try his hand at the bodhrán, much to the delight of those present! Not to be outdone, Irish dancers from the Reilly School of Irish Dancing performed an energetic jig and reel, before Their Majesties admired the Fleadh harp, a ceremonial gift that passes between host cities and will remain here as Belfast prepares to host the festival a second time in August 2027.
Lord Mayor Councillor Tracy Kelly expressed her excitement, saying, "What an honour for Belfast to host The King and Queen today and give them a real sense of what's in store for visitors to our city." She added, "Hosting Fleadh Cheoil is an opportunity to 'celebrate together' and put on the very best of Belfast, in all its shared traditions, so everyone can feel part of it. Today's visit shows the colour, vibrancy, music and craic on offer this August. I'm delighted to have given The King and Queen a taste of that today."
