A 35-year-old man is set to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 2nd November, facing charges linked to a major security operation in the Shankill area.
The charges follow operations conducted by officers from the PSNI Terrorism Investigation Unit, who searched properties in both the Shankill Road and Edwina Street areas on Friday, 30th October and Saturday, 31st October. During the searches, suspicious devices were uncovered, prompting the immediate evacuation of nearby families and neighbours as a safety precaution. Ammunition Technical Officers were called in to inspect the items, and a significant security cordon was placed across the Berlin Street area.
The 35-year-old man was taken into custody and has formally been charged with two counts of possessing explosives under suspicious circumstances, along with possession of a prohibited weapon capable of discharging electricity or noxious gas. As part of standard legal procedures, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
Providing an update on the operation, Detective Chief Inspector McCallum confirmed that several suspicious devices and additional items were seized for forensic analysis. He confirmed that all security cordons have now been safely taken down and evacuated residents have been able to return home, extending sincere thanks to the local community for their patience and cooperation while officers worked to keep the area safe.
Investigators are continuing their enquiries and have asked anyone with information that could assist the investigation to get in touch. Members of the community can contact police on 101, quoting reference number 261 30/10/26, or submit details via the PSNI online reporting form. Information can also be shared completely anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or visiting www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
