A 44-year-old man has appeared before the High Court in Dublin as part of an extradition process related to a murder investigation in North Belfast. Jonathan Gill, of Malahide Road in Clontarf, was brought before the court following his arrest on foot of a warrant issued in Northern Ireland.
The charges against Mr. Gill relate to the murder of Robbie Lawlor, which took place in the Ardoyne area on April 4, 2020. In addition to the murder charge, he is also accused of possessing a 9mm pistol between April 2 and April 5 of the same year.
During the court proceedings, Detective Sergeant Frank Lambe of the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation provided evidence of the arrest, which took place in Dublin on April 2. The court was informed that Mr. Gill was cautioned and made no reply when the warrant was executed. At the police station, when asked if he knew about the offences, he replied "No."
Judge Barry O’Donnell informed the accused of his legal rights, including the right to legal representation and the option to consent to surrender to the UK authorities. Mr. Gill confirmed he understood these rights. Following the hearing, Mr. Gill was remanded in custody at Cloverhill Prison. He is scheduled to appear again on April 21, when the next stage of the extradition process will be heard.
