Man Refused Bail Following Rooftop Incident in New Lodge

A Hillman Street man has been remanded in custody after a court heard details of an extensive rooftop incident in the New Lodge area earlier this week. Patrick John Paul Harmon, 42, appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning following the standoff on Lepper Street in the early hours of Tuesday.

The court heard that a police officer was injured and several local cars and properties were damaged during the disturbance. Officers apprehended Mr Harmon after he fell from the roof. During police interviews, he admitted to climbing onto the building to evade police, throwing roof slates at officers, damaging police vehicles, and threatening officers with a knife.

In total, Mr Harmon faces 14 charges. These include the assault of three police officers, assault against two other named individuals, criminal damage to cars and property, indecent exposure, and possession of an offensive weapon described as a knife.

Police strongly opposed bail due to the risk of reoffending and public harm. Although defense solicitors suggested that stringent conditions could allow for safe release, District Judge Anne Marshall firmly refused the application. Describing the request as "utterly impossible," Judge Marshall cited an extremely high risk of reoffending and failing to surrender to court.

Mr Harmon remains in custody, and his case is scheduled to be mentioned again in court on August 27.
