The North Belfast community gathered in solemn remembrance this week at Holy Cross Church in Ardoyne to celebrate the life of Mary McCrudden. Mary, a well-known and much-loved grandmother, tragically passed away following a collision on Ardoyne Avenue on Tuesday.
During the service, the presiding priest spoke movingly of Mary’s return to the same church where she and her husband, Tommy, were married on April 1, 1978. He highlighted her deep faith, noting that she didn't just hear the word of God but lived it every day. He described her as someone who carried the many challenges of her life with immense dignity and hope, serving as a testament to her strength of character.
Her grandson, Emmett, shared a heartfelt eulogy on behalf of his mother, painting a picture of a woman who was the epicenter of her family. He spoke of her resilience through difficult times, particularly the loss of her baby son, Kevin, a trauma that stayed with her throughout her life. Despite enduring chronic pain and preparing for knee surgery, Mary had recently found her sparkle again, looking forward to the future with renewed energy and determination.
Mary was a familiar face in the neighborhood, known for her love of chatting with friends and her dedication to her home. Just days before her passing, she had been working in her garden, planting seeds and arranging solar lights to welcome the spring. Her grandson noted that her need to be out and about, connecting with the community she loved, was a testament to her vibrant and social spirit.
As a devoted wife to Tommy and a dedicated mother to Steven, Sean, and Briege, Mary also served as a supportive stepmother to Kathleen, Thomas, Brendan, Eamon, James, and Patricia. Her family described her as the person who organized everything and ensured everyone was looked after, leaving a void that will be felt forever. Following the Requiem Mass, Mary was laid to rest at Milltown Cemetery.
