Belfast has officially welcomed its new Lord Mayor, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly, who was installed at City Hall on June 1, 2026. Hailing from the Ballymurphy area and representing West Belfast's Black Mountain electoral area, Councillor Donnelly takes over from Councillor Tracy Kelly with an exciting vision for the city. She's urging everyone to "Celebrate Together" and showcase the very best of Belfast as we gear up for a fantastic summer, especially with Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann on the horizon.
The new Lord Mayor highlighted that this is a pivotal year for Belfast, calling on all citizens to get involved and demonstrate what we can achieve when we work as one. With the Fleadh taking place in both 2026 and 2027, it presents a unique opportunity for communities across the city to engage in one of Europe’s biggest cultural events. Councillor Donnelly believes this team effort will highlight our vibrant people, diversity, traditions, and stories, creating lasting benefits for years to come and encouraging visitors to explore every corner of Belfast.
Among her key priorities for her term, Councillor Donnelly (30) is particularly keen to champion young people, especially girls and young women. Recognising that 40% of Belfast’s population is aged 30 or under, she aims to work with them to gather their ideas and empower them to shape solutions for challenges like the cost of living, inclusive growth, and climate change. She is committed to supporting projects that empower younger women in our communities, tackle negative behaviours, and ensure access to support services so everyone can reach their full potential.
Another significant focus for the Lord Mayor will be promoting and nurturing the Irish language. Councillor Donnelly noted that Belfast’s Irish language community is flourishing, stating that, like all languages, it deserves protection and support. She plans to showcase the excellent work being done across the city to foster interest and connection, emphasising how language can serve as a positive force for good within our communities and contribute to the city's regeneration.
Joining Councillor Donnelly in leadership is the new Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Hedley Abernethy. A member of the Alliance party, Councillor Abernethy represents the Ormiston electoral area, succeeding Councillor Paul Doherty. This formal installation marked the beginning of a new chapter for Belfast's leadership, setting the stage for a collaborative and celebratory period ahead.
