North Belfast Family to Run in Memory of Local Legend Seamy Perry

Family and friends from the Newington area are coming together this weekend for the Red Dress Fun Run. They are raising vital funds and heart health awareness in memory of the late Seamus 'Seamy' Perry.

This weekend, the North Belfast community will come together to honour the memory of a local man who was a familiar face in the Newington area. Seamus Perry, known to everyone as Seamy, was just 51 when he passed away in January following a sudden heart attack. Now, his fiancé Elaine, his mother Patricia, and a group of close friends are preparing to take on the Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke (NICHS) Red Dress Fun Run at Stormont in his name.

Seamy, who grew up in Newington before moving to Glengormley, was a massive character in the local area. A talented footballer, he was a lifelong supporter and player for Newington Football Club, having been involved with the club since its early days. He was even named as one of the '40 Players from 40 Years'—a recognition that meant the world to his family. Beyond the pitch, Seamy was known for his incredible work ethic in the fruit and vegetable trade and his ability to light up any dance floor with his infectious personality.

His sudden passing has left a huge void, and his family wants to ensure his story helps others. Elaine and the team hope that by sharing their experience, they can raise awareness about heart health. They want to remind the community that heart conditions can affect anyone at any age, and it is vital not to ignore 'niggles' or chest pains, even if they seem minor or feel like indigestion. Getting checked out by a doctor can make all the difference.

The group has already raised over £1,500 for NICHS, a local charity that provides essential support to those living with heart conditions across Northern Ireland. The Red Dress Fun Run takes place this Sunday, March 22, at Stormont Estate. It is an inclusive event for all ages and abilities, and Seamy’s young grandson will even be joining the group in his buggy to honour his grandfather.

Those wishing to support the cause or take part in the event can register online at the NICHS website until Friday at 2pm, or simply turn up and register on the day. Every step taken and every pound raised helps support local families and prevents others from facing similar heartbreak.
