Belfast City Hall was filled with festive cheer and a powerful message of inclusion earlier this month, as the talented choir from Mitchell House School took centre stage. Their special performance on December 3rd marked International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), a vital occasion to champion the rights and wellbeing of disabled people across our city.
The young choir members delivered a heartwarming selection of festive carols in the East Wing, captivating an audience that included Belfast's Lord Mayor, Councillor Tracy Kelly, and Councillor Ruth Brooks, Chair of the Council's Disability Working Group. Families of the students were also there to share in the proud moment. The event served as a vibrant reminder of the importance of celebrating diversity and ensuring everyone has an equal place in our community.
Beyond the musical celebration, underscored its commitment to accessibility by hosting a separate, dedicated event. This gathering brought together Council staff, Councillors, and members of the Disability Advisory Panel for an insightful discussion on accessibility challenges and the lived experiences of people with disabilities in Belfast.
Esteemed guest speakers Jamie Shields and Celia Chartres-Aris from 'Disabled by Society' shared their valuable perspectives, alongside members of the Council’s own Disability Advisory Panel, contributing to a deeper understanding of how we can collectively build a more inclusive North Belfast and beyond.
