A fresh appeal has been launched for information regarding the tragic deaths of James and Ellen Sefton, who were killed in a car bombing in North Belfast over 35 years ago. The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR) is leading the investigation at the request of the Sefton family, who are still searching for the truth about what happened to their loved ones.
On the morning of Wednesday, June 6, 1990, 65-year-old James Sefton and his 66-year-old wife Ellen left their home on Lyndhurst Gardens. As they drove towards the city centre at approximately 10am, a booby trap device exploded beneath their vehicle. James, a former police officer who was driving at the time, was fatally injured and passed away at the Mater Hospital. Ellen was critically injured and was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital, where she sadly died the following day.
Assistant Commissioner Amanda Logan, who is heading the commission’s investigation, emphasized that even the smallest piece of information could be vital. She noted that the family deserves to know the truth and that someone in the community may hold the key to understanding why this happened. The commission aims to provide accountability and answers for families who have been left in pain for decades.
As part of this renewed effort, residents in the local area can expect to see posters and receive leaflets detailing the investigation. The community is encouraged to come forward with any memories or details from that time, as every contribution helps in the pursuit of clarity and peace for the Sefton family.
