Belfast City Centre is getting an exciting upgrade with the rollout of high-tech SMART compactor bins. These solar-powered units can hold five times more waste and notify collection teams when full, making our streets cleaner and reducing pollution. This initiative promises a more welcoming environment for everyone visiting or living near the city centre.

Great news for a tidier Belfast, impacting all of us who visit, work, and shop in the city centre! Our urban heart is undergoing a significant upgrade in how we manage waste, with advanced SMART compactor bins now being rolled out across key areas. This exciting initiative aims to keep our bustling streets cleaner and more welcoming for residents and visitors alike.
Following a successful trial at City Hall, the project will see 20 traditional litter bins replaced by 13 high-capacity SMART units. Crucially, this includes three dedicated recycling SMART bins, significantly boosting our on-street recycling capabilities and helping us all be a bit greener.
The focus is on high-footfall areas to make the biggest impact. You'll find these new bins replacing existing ones in places like Donegall Place (where 14 standard bins are being swapped out), Donegall Square North (four replacements), and Royal Avenue (two replacements). There’s also a brand new SMART bin installation on High Street, conveniently located outside Centra.
So, what makes these bins so 'smart'? They use solar-powered compaction technology, allowing them to hold up to five times the volume of a standard bin – that’s a lot less overflowing litter! Inside, sensors constantly monitor fullness levels in real-time. This means cleansing teams are notified exactly when a collection is needed, eliminating wasted trips to half-empty bins.
The results from the initial trial were impressive, showing this technology can reduce collection frequency by over 80%. This isn't just about efficiency; by cutting down on unnecessary vehicle journeys, the council is reducing carbon emissions and fuel consumption. It also frees up our street cleansing crews to focus on other vital tasks, like power washing and manual litter picking, ensuring a more thorough clean. Plus, their fully enclosed design means no more wind-blown litter or pests getting into the waste – a win for urban cleanliness.
This expansion is part of a wider, city-wide review of litter bin infrastructure. Alongside the SMART technology rollout, a comprehensive survey of all 3,000+ bins across Belfast is underway to inform a long-term replacement and maintenance programme. It's all about making sure our city's waste management is future-proof.
Councillor Fred Cobain, Chair of the People and Communities Committee, highlighted the commitment to progress, stating, “We are committed to using innovative technology to provide a cleaner, more sustainable city.” He added, “The data from our trial at City Hall was clear; SMART bins allow us to work more efficiently, respond faster to full bins and keep our most iconic streets tidy, even during peak periods. By replacing ageing infrastructure with these compactors, we are ensuring Belfast remains a clean and attractive place to live, work, and visit.”
