On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, two residents from our North Belfast community were sentenced at Belfast Magistrates Court for serious animal welfare offences. These cases, brought forward after investigations into complaints of neglect, underscore the crucial importance of responsible pet ownership and the severe consequences of failing to ensure an animal's welfare.
In the first case, Ms. Jessica Edwards, residing at Ashfield Court, was sentenced for causing unnecessary suffering to animals in April 2025. The prosecution was initiated after a complaint regarding a dog being left unattended for several days. Tragically, upon entering the property, an Animal Welfare Officer discovered the bodies of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier type dog and two rabbits, all showing clear signs of starvation. Ms. Edwards was given a 180-hour Community Service Order, ordered to pay legal and court costs of £198, and has been disqualified from owning any animal for a period of ten years.
In a separate incident, Mr. Michael Valliday, from Albert Court, was also convicted and sentenced for animal welfare offences. The prosecution followed complaints that a dog at the Albert Court property was showing signs of starvation. Animal Welfare Officers attended the premises on December 5, 2025, and took a severely underweight Akita type dog into the care of the council. Mr. Valliday was convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and failing to ensure its welfare. He received a 100-hour Community Service Order, was ordered to pay legal and court costs of £182, and was also disqualified from owning any animal for a period of ten years.
These outcomes serve as a stark reminder that animal cruelty and neglect will not be tolerated in our community. It is vital that all pet owners understand their responsibilities. If you have concerns about the welfare of an animal in North Belfast, please do not hesitate to report it to the relevant authorities.
