North Belfast is home to a remarkable creative talent in Olalekan Kushimo, professionally known as Kush. A photographer, animator, and abstract artist, Kush is currently planning a bold new project: a city mural that brings a West African-inspired twist to the traditional Belfast landscape. Originally from the bustling city of Lagos, Nigeria, the 49-year-old artist has spent a lifetime observing the world through a creative lens, transitioning from a potential career in civil engineering to follow his true passion for the arts.
Kush’s work is defined by a unique style he calls 'Ila,' which focuses on intricate lines and patterns. His designs are deeply rooted in Nsibidi symbols and traditional tribal marks, such as the Yoruba marks from southwestern Nigeria. By transposing the English alphabet into these ancient pattern forms, Kush creates visual puzzles that invite viewers to engage deeply with the art. He describes these patterns as solutions to visual problems, creating a stream of work that tells a story and draws the community into a cross-cultural dialogue.
Before settling in Belfast, Kush’s talent earned him international acclaim, with his work being exhibited in major art capitals including London, Paris, Barcelona, Athens, and New York. He also received a Special Recognition Award in 2021 for his contributions to arts and culture. Since arriving in Northern Ireland, he has been dedicated to integrating into the local community, serving as an art facilitator at Family Comfort NI and hosting a successful solo exhibition at the Arts for All gallery in 2024.
For Kush, the move to Belfast has been a transformative experience. He is fascinated by the city's famous wall murals and is eager to contribute his own mark to the local environment. By blending his Nigerian heritage with the culture of his new home, he hopes to create a mural that reflects his journey and celebrates the diversity of North Belfast. As he continues to develop his designs, residents can look forward to seeing his vibrant, puzzle-like patterns appearing on a wall in the community soon.
