North Belfast Set for Boost with New Sailortown Bridge Plans

Exciting news for North Belfast! Plans are moving forward for a brand new, high-quality active travel bridge connecting Sailortown to the Titanic Quarter. This significant project aims to improve connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing links across the River Lagan and boosting local regeneration.

North Belfast is set to receive a fantastic boost with exciting plans progressing for a brand new, high-quality active travel bridge across the River Lagan. This transformative project will connect the historic Sailortown area directly with the vibrant Titanic Quarter, creating improved pathways for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users.

has successfully secured vital funding from the Department for Infrastructure, enabling them to appoint a world-class Integrated Design Team. This expert group includes global consulting engineer Arup and renowned bridge designer Knight Architects, working alongside Eadon Consulting for mechanical and electrical engineering, and Cumming Group for cost consultancy. Their immediate task is to develop the feasibility and concept design, with a preferred bridge option expected to be recommended next year.

Councillor Ian McLaughlin, Chair of the City Growth and Regeneration Committee, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. He highlighted how the Sailortown Bridge is a key part of the Belfast Waterfront Framework’s vision, aiming to create a more connected, vibrant, and attractive corridor. This new link will seamlessly connect North Belfast's communities to key education, leisure, tourism, and economic destinations, as well as the city centre itself.

The bridge is specifically designed to encourage more people to walk, wheel, and cycle, promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing reliance on cars. Councillor McLaughlin added, "We're confident that the resulting design concepts will be iconic, and that the bridge will encourage more people to walk, wheel and cycle to the many key destinations around the Harbour Loop along both sides of the River Lagan.”

Héctor Beade, Design Director at Knight Architects, shared the team's excitement, noting the area's rich shipbuilding history, unique waterfront setting, and the significant opportunities for modal shift. Mike Mitchell, Project Director at Arup, further elaborated on the bridge's pivotal role in Belfast's active travel infrastructure. He explained that this new link, located downstream of the existing Lagan Weir bridge, will extend the uninterrupted active travel corridor from the Lagan Gateway and provide stronger connections to the recently upgraded York Street train station – a major benefit for local commuters and visitors alike.

This regeneration project marks a significant step forward in enhancing connectivity and promoting sustainable travel options for everyone in North Belfast and across the city. The Sailortown Bridge promises to be a landmark feature, fostering community links and opening up new possibilities for exploration and enjoyment of Belfast’s waterfront.
