Get ready for a bustling summer in Belfast! With an unprecedented number of visitors expected, including for the huge Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, our city’s businesses are being invited to a vital free seminar focusing on making North Belfast and wider city venues welcoming for everyone.
The ‘Embrace the Inclusive Spirit’ workshop is a fantastic opportunity for all Belfast-based tourism and hospitality businesses, tour guides, and event organisers. It will take place on Tuesday, 17th February, from 9am to 2pm, at Titanic Belfast. This isn’t just about good will; catering to disabled visitors is a significant market, contributing an estimated £249 billion to the UK economy.
Councillor Ian McLaughlin, Chair of the council’s City Growth and Regeneration Committee, highlighted the importance: “With Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann set to attract at least 800,000 visitors to Belfast from 2nd to 9th August, ensuring everyone can access and enjoy what our city offers is paramount. This workshop offers practical steps, first-hand experiences from disabled travellers, and marketing insights to help businesses reach new customers and make the most of this year’s opportunities.”
Attendees will hear from inspiring speakers, including Jamie Shields, co-founding director of Disabled by Society. Jamie, who is registered blind and openly shares his experiences with ADHD and autism, will discuss how inclusive approaches have enhanced his own travels. Comedian Emer Maguire will bring her insights as an autistic adult, drawing from her experiences performing in venues across the UK and Ireland. Also sharing her expertise will be Cathelijne Denekamp, Accessibility and Inclusion Manager at Amsterdam’s renowned Rijksmuseum, who will reveal strategies for creating world-class inclusive visitor experiences.
The seminar will also celebrate those already making a difference with the second ‘Embrace the Inclusive Spirit’ Inclusive Tourism Awards, recognising organisations nominated by the public. Furthermore, businesses who received small grants of up to £500 to improve visitor experiences will share their success stories. These grants, still available to eligible businesses, charities, and social enterprises on a first-come, first-served basis, have supported initiatives from staff training and sensory packs to developing accessible websites and updating signage.
These initiatives are all part of the broader ‘Embrace the Inclusive Spirit’ programme, designed to bolster our city’s tourism sector and explore new markets. To book your free place at the ‘Embrace the Inclusive Spirit’ seminar, please visit the event booking page online.
