Local police have responded to community concerns regarding the dangerous use of electric bikes and scooters across North Belfast. Following a series of targeted operations and the use of new tactics, officers have confirmed that 16 young people are now facing the criminal justice system.
The operation resulted in the seizure of 13 electric bikes and scramblers, along with three electric scooters. These actions come after widespread reports of large groups using these vehicles in a way that caused distress and posed a significant safety risk to the public.
Authorities are reminding residents that these vehicles are not toys. When used on roads or in public places, they carry a real risk of causing serious injury or even death. Under current laws, it is illegal to use these vehicles in public spaces without a valid driving license, insurance, and tax, and they must meet specific construction regulations.
Police are appealing directly to parents and guardians to take responsibility for their children’s safety and the safety of the wider community. Lasting change depends on the support of local families. Residents are encouraged to speak with young people about the dangers and ensure these vehicles are kept off our public roads to help keep North Belfast safe for everyone.
