Local representatives from across Belfast have united to strongly condemn yesterday evening's incident in North Belfast. They wish to place on record their unwavering stance against such violence, stating clearly that it has no place in our city. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are extended today to the victim and their family, as well as to those who witnessed the incident and bravely intervened.
Recognising the distress and fear this incident has caused, community leaders are urging everyone not to share any graphic footage circulating, to prevent further trauma to those involved. All parties are fully supporting the PSNI as they continue their investigation into this attack, and we appeal to anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward to them immediately to help establish the full facts.
Belfast is a proud city, built on strong community bonds, compassion, and mutual respect. There is absolutely no room for violence and hatred here. We encourage everyone to unite behind this powerful message and allow the PSNI the necessary space to carry out their important investigation effectively.
In light of anticipated protests planned for this evening, Wednesday 9 June, please be aware that all council services will not operate from 5:30 pm onwards. This temporary suspension includes all council venues and overnight cleansing services. Furthermore, tonight's meeting of the People and Communities Committee has been postponed until further notice. We anticipate that normal services will happily resume as planned tomorrow, Thursday 10 June. Any further updates regarding council services will be shared directly via the council's website and their social media channels.
