Two years ago, North Belfast nurse Sinead McElmeel found herself in a place many people can relate to. Living with a painful back injury, carrying 109 kilograms, and wearing a size 24, exercise was simply not on her radar. Today, the 35-year-old has not only healed her back and lost an incredible 45 kilograms, but she has also completely reshaped her lifestyle and inspired her entire family along the way.
Sinead's journey began in October 2024 when her GP referred her to Better Gyms through the Physical Activity Referral Scheme (PARS). The initiative is designed to help individuals living with chronic health conditions safely increase their physical activity under the guidance of qualified exercise professionals. After attending a specialised back clinic, she was encouraged to explore gentle movement such as pilates and yoga.
While traditional solo workouts felt daunting, group fitness classes quickly changed everything for Sinead. Under the guidance of instructor Andrea Adams, she threw herself into Pilates, core fitness, and aqua aerobics. What started as rehabilitation soon turned into a genuine passion, and Sinead now attends up to 15 classes a week across several of Better's leisure centres in Belfast.
Sinead admits that stepping into a gym environment was initially intimidating, but finding the right support made all the difference. She credits her instructor, Andrea, with providing steady encouragement and answering every question as she built up strength. Sinead has even taken up weightlifting—something she never imagined trying—and is now working towards becoming a qualified Pilates and aqua aerobics instructor herself.
Her positive momentum has also spread to her household. Both of Sinead's parents have increased their daily activity levels, and her sister regularly joins her for workouts, turning fitness into a shared family routine.
Reflecting on her experience, Sinead encourages other North Belfast residents who might feel hesitant or nervous about getting active to take things one step at a time. Rather than attempting a drastic overhaul, she recommends trying different classes and instructors until you find an activity that feels fun rather than like a chore.
GLL, the charitable social enterprise that has managed Belfast City Council's leisure facilities under the Better brand since 2015, praised Sinead's remarkable turnaround. Gareth Kirk, Senior Regional Director at GLL, highlighted that while her 45kg weight loss is an outstanding milestone, the true success lies in the boost to her confidence, health, and quality of life, demonstrating the powerful role supported community wellness programmes can play.
