Five teenagers are now facing charges in connection with a large-scale disturbance that took place at Ballyholme beach in April last year. The case, which was heard at Newtownards Youth Court on Tuesday, has seen two further individuals added to the indictment. Among those newly charged is 19-year-old Ahmed Izeldin Mohamed, who has an address at Kansas Avenue in North Belfast. Both he and a 16-year-old co-defendant face charges of affray and three counts of causing actual bodily harm.
Other defendants in the case include three 17-year-olds who face a range of serious charges, including inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of weapons such as a knife, a knuckle duster, and a broken bottle. The incident, which occurred on April 11 last year, drew significant attention at the time after videos of the fight were shared across social media platforms. Despite initial online rumours suggesting a fatality had occurred, the police confirmed that no one had died and urged the public to be responsible when posting online.
During the recent court appearance, District Judge Amanda Brady expressed strong frustration over delays in the legal process. The court heard that papers had not been served on one of the defendants because the officer in charge was on leave. Judge Brady described the situation as 'unacceptable' and 'astonishing,' questioning why no other officers could have fulfilled the duty. While the prosecution requested a six-week adjournment to resolve the issue, the judge refused the lengthy delay, instead putting the case back to March 24. The proceedings aim to eventually return the case to the Crown Court for trial.
