North Belfast has been buzzing with the sweet sounds of traditional Irish music recently, as Ulster University's York Street campus played host to hundreds of aspiring young musicians and learners for the world-renowned Scoil Éigse summer school. This vital international school, run by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, serves as the heart of traditional music tuition during the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, drawing talent from across the globe right here to our doorstep.
Throughout the week, top traditional musicians provided intensive, world-class tuition in a diverse range of instruments including the fiddle, flute, banjo, harp, concertina, button accordion, and uilleann pipes. The campus was alive with master classes, engaging youth sessions, and focused preparation for the hotly anticipated All-Ireland competitions, which were set to kick off the following day and run through the weekend. Daily recitals offered a taste of the incredible talent being nurtured.
The highlight of the week arrived with the spectacular Seisiún Mór na hÉigse, a grand finale performance that saw students and their tutors gather on the iconic steps of nearby Belfast Cathedral. This massive collaborative performance truly filled the city with an infectious energy of traditional music, captivating everyone who passed by.
Among those who gathered to enjoy this special performance and meet the talented young musicians and their dedicated tutors were Belfast's Lord Mayor, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly, and Taoiseach Micheál Martin, underscoring the significance of this cultural celebration in our city. It was a fantastic showcase of talent and community spirit right here in North Belfast.
