As the festive season wraps up and thoughts turn to the new year, many in North Belfast might be facing the upcoming Self Assessment tax deadline. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is offering a helping hand, reminding local residents that support is available to manage their tax bills.
The deadline to file your Self Assessment return and pay any tax owed is 31 January 2026. However, if you find yourself unable to pay the full amount by then, HMRC's 'Time to Pay' service offers a practical solution. This scheme allows you to spread the cost of your tax bill through manageable monthly instalments.
For those with tax bills of up to £30,000, you can easily set up a 'Time to Pay' arrangement online without needing to contact HMRC directly. This straightforward process helps thousands each year – nearly 18,000 plans have already been set up since April 6, 2025 – ensuring people can meet their obligations and avoid late payment penalties. Remember, you'll need to have filed your Self Assessment return before you can set up a payment plan.
If your tax bill is more than £30,000, or if you require a longer repayment period, you can still apply for a 'Time to Pay' arrangement, but you'll need to get in touch with HMRC directly. HMRC encourages everyone to file their tax return early. This doesn't mean you have to pay early, but it gives you a clearer picture of what you owe sooner, reducing last-minute stress.
A spokesperson from HMRC highlighted their commitment to helping customers manage their tax responsibilities. "We're here to help customers get their tax right. If you are worried about paying your Self Assessment bill, assistance is available. Our online payment plans offer financial flexibility and can be tailored to individual circumstances. We want to support all our customers in meeting their tax obligations with confidence," they said.
You have several convenient ways to pay your Self Assessment bill, including using the free and secure HMRC app or through GOV.UK. A full list of payment options is readily available on the GOV.UK website.
A crucial reminder for everyone: please stay vigilant against scams. Criminals often use emails, phone calls, and texts impersonating HMRC to try and steal personal details or money. Always check before sharing any personal or financial information and never give out your HMRC login details.
Additionally, if you've received a Simple Assessment letter, the payment deadline for any tax owed is also 31 January 2026. These letters are sent to individuals who have unpaid Income Tax from the 2024 to 2025 tax year that couldn't be collected through their employer or pension provider (PAYE). If you receive a Simple Assessment on or after 31 October 2025 for tax owed during the 2024 to 2025 tax year, you will have three months from the date of your assessment to pay your bill. Both Self Assessment and Simple Assessment payments can be made in full, or in smaller amounts as long as the balance is cleared by the deadline, either on GOV.UK or via the HMRC app.
