Working hard in North Belfast? Whether you're a long-term employee or picking up a short-term role, it’s absolutely vital to ensure you’re getting the pay you’re legally entitled to. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is urging all workers, including our local seasonal staff in retail, hospitality, warehouses, and other sectors, to 'Check Your Pay'.
Many people don't realise that temporary and seasonal staff, along with those on short-term contracts or students, have the same legal rights to minimum pay rates as any other worker. It's not just about your hourly rate; it’s crucial to look out for other common issues that can lead to underpayment. This includes working time that isn't paid, such as starting early or staying late to open or close up, cleaning, or attending mandatory training sessions outside your standard hours. Unfair deductions for things like uniforms or equipment that take your pay below the minimum wage are also unacceptable and should be reported.
HMRC is committed to ensuring fair pay for everyone. In 2024-25 alone, they identified £5.8 million in wage arrears owed to over 25,000 underpaid UK workers, issuing significant penalties to non-compliant employers.
Kevin Hubbard, HMRC Director Individuals and Small Business Compliance, highlights the importance of this message: “We want to make sure that workers are paid correctly. People should check their hourly rate and look out for any deductions or unpaid working time, which could take them below the minimum wage. Always make sure that you check your pay. If you think you have been short changed, even if you no longer work for the employer, we are here to help.”
Current National Minimum Wage Rates:
£12.21 per hour – Age 21 and over (National Living Wage)
£7.55 per hour – Apprentice (aged under 19, or aged 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship)
What to do if you think you're being underpaid:
If you believe you’re not receiving the correct pay, or are concerned about someone else, you can report it to HMRC online. The process takes around five minutes, can be done confidentially at any time, and even after a job has ended.
For confidential, free advice and support, you can phone the Acas Pay and Work Rights Helpline on 0300 123 1100 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm). In Northern Ireland, you can also contact the Labour Relations Agency for advice.
