Northern Regional College recently led the way in celebrating International Women's Day, bringing together over 100 students and staff from across its campuses for a special conference. Held under the inspiring theme "Give to Gain," the event highlighted the crucial role of collaboration, empowerment, and gender equality in both education and leadership.
This significant conference was a key part of a wider international partnership project, funded by the British Council. Northern Regional College is working closely with Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) in Ghana on this initiative, which aims to boost gender equality, create leadership opportunities, and increase participation for women in fields traditionally dominated by men, such as engineering and STEM subjects.
Attendees experienced a day filled with engaging activities, including guest speakers, interactive workshops, and thought-provoking panel discussions. These sessions were designed to challenge existing perceptions, inspire the next generation of leaders, and foster open conversations about equality and opportunity for all.
The day kicked off with an energetic quiz led by youth facilitator Jamie Plant, encouraging everyone to rethink common myths and statistics surrounding gender equality. A powerful panel discussion followed, expertly chaired by Lynsey Sloan, Head of Department at Northern Regional College. The panel delved into critical themes like Women in Leadership, Women in STEM, and the importance of breaking down societal stereotypes that can limit opportunities for women and girls. Speakers shared compelling insights and personal stories, including Caitline Anderson (Student Women’s Officer), Gareth Spratt (Curriculum Area Manager), Kevin McReynolds from White Ribbon NI, and even Ing. Prof. Abena Agyeiwaa Obiri-Yeboah, Pro Vice Chancellor of Kumasi Technical University, who joined remotely.
The global impact of the College’s work was further showcased when Ing. Prof. Julius C. Ahiekpor, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at KsTU, detailed ongoing initiatives in Ghana to encourage more girls into engineering and technical careers. Early Years lecturer Tanyza Teague delivered an inspiring closing message, emphasizing mutual support and the value of both giving and receiving mentorship throughout one's career journey.
Throughout the event, students creatively contributed to an International Women’s Day memory board, sharing Polaroid photos, inspirational quotes, and the names of women who have profoundly influenced them. This captured the vibrant spirit of the day and its central theme. A number of vital support organisations were also present, offering information to students, including Glow NI, Women’s Aid, Nexus, and the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
Lynsey Sloan remarked on the success of the conference, stating, "This conference was a fantastic opportunity to bring together students, staff and international partners to celebrate the achievements of women while also having honest conversations about the challenges that still exist. Through our partnership with Kumasi Technical University and the support of the British Council, we are able to share knowledge, learn from one another and continue working towards greater gender equality in education and the workplace. Events like this encourage our students to reflect, engage and see themselves as part of the next generation of leaders and changemakers."
This International Women’s Day Conference is just one of many initiatives reflecting Northern Regional College’s dedication to global collaboration, student involvement, and championing equality across all sectors of education and industry, benefiting students right here in Northern Ireland.
