The North Belfast community is being thanked for their vigilance following a series of arrests in the Shankill Road area on Thursday evening, April 9. Police received multiple emergency calls from concerned members of the public reporting a man carrying a large machete near the junction of Townsend Street. At the time of the incident, the area was busy with many local people, including children.
Officers arrived promptly at the scene, where they disarmed and arrested a 40-year-old man. He was taken into custody on charges of possession of an offensive weapon and being simple drunk. Police highlighted that the quick actions of residents in calling 999 were vital in preventing potential injury or damage in our neighborhood.
As officers were managing the initial incident, they observed a white Volkswagen Golf being driven erratically nearby. After stopping the vehicle and conducting a breath test, a 39-year-old man was arrested. Further tests showed he was twice over the legal alcohol limit. He faces charges including driving with excess alcohol, possession of an offensive weapon, disorderly behavior, and possession of a Class B controlled drug.
The PSNI Sprucefield Road Policing Interceptors, who were patrolling North Belfast at the time, expressed their gratitude to the community. They noted that the decisive action taken by those who reported the male with the machete ensured the situation was handled safely before anyone was hurt.
