A 24-month suspended sentence has been handed to a local man following an incident of criminal damage on Rathlin Street during the public disorder last summer. Curtis Bell, of Vistula Street, appeared at Belfast Crown Court on Friday in relation to the events that took place on August 6, 2024.
The court heard how a group of men targeted several homes in the area. CCTV footage showed Bell launching himself at a front door and kicking in the central panel while others in the group attacked the property. Following the incident, Bell was arrested in nearby Leopold Gardens in possession of a balaclava. Although he initially denied the charges, he later pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage.
During the sentencing, it was noted that the damage to the property was estimated at approximately £2,000. While the defense highlighted Bell’s diagnosis of adult ADHD and his previous clear criminal record, Judge Gordon Kerr KC described the event as a violent attack on a house. The Judge emphasized that such actions were part of wider racially motivated protests and noted the potential terror caused to anyone inside the homes at the time, including children.
The PSNI has reiterated its commitment to bringing those involved in the August disorder to justice. Detective Inspector Kitchen noted that the investigation team continues to work through cases related to the disorder that left residents fearing for their lives and caused extensive damage to homes and businesses across the city. Residents are encouraged to report any information regarding such crimes to the police to help maintain the safety and peace of our community. Reports can be made via 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
