Community Rallies for Scotch Quarters Residents Following Arson Attack

Residents of the Scotch Quarters building in Carrick Hill are still facing uncertainty nearly a week after a deliberate fire forced them to evacuate their homes. The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of Saturday, May 2, is being treated as an arson attack and has left around 18 people, including several families, without a permanent place to stay while safety checks and repairs are carried out.

Choice Housing, the association managing the site, has confirmed that all affected tenants have been offered alternative accommodation. While many residents have moved into temporary housing, others have chosen to stay with family or remain in their properties despite the current lack of electricity. Security services are currently on-site 24/7 to protect the building while work continues to restore power and ensure the flats are fully habitable. Choice Housing aims to have these essential services reconnected by the end of the week.

Local representatives have been active on the ground supporting those impacted. Independent Councillor Paul McCusker has been meeting with residents and housing officials to address concerns regarding the speed of repairs and the activation of emergency procedures. He is calling for an urgent response to make the flats safe and to help find more suitable long-term housing options for those who do not wish to return to the building.

North Belfast MLA Carál Ní Chuilín also expressed her gratitude to the emergency services for their quick action in preventing serious injuries or fatalities. She praised the incredible spirit of the Carrick Hill community, who immediately stepped up to offer help and support to their neighbors during the evacuation. As the investigation into the arson continues, the focus remains on getting residents back into safe, powered homes as quickly as possible.
