A security alert is currently underway in North Belfast following the discovery of a suspicious object earlier today. The alert began around noon on Good Friday, April 3, centered on the Workman Avenue area at its junction with the Springfield Road. Police have moved to seal off the scene, resulting in several road closures and the evacuation of nearby residents to ensure public safety.
Currently, Workman Avenue and Woodvale Avenue are closed to all traffic. The Springfield Road has also been shut down between the Innovation Factory and Lanark Way. The PSNI is advising all motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area and find alternative routes for their journeys while the investigation continues.
Public transport is also affected by the ongoing incident. Translink has announced that Metro 10K services are operating via the Whiterock Road, while all 10M services are being diverted via the Shankill Road and Lanark Way. These changes will remain in place until the area is deemed safe.
Local representative Claire Canavan has condemned the incident, highlighting the significant disruption it is causing the community at the start of the Easter weekend. Residents are encouraged to stay patient and stay away from the cordons while emergency services complete their work.
