Are you looking for a rewarding career that allows you to contribute directly to the future of our local area? An exciting new Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) in Planning has just been launched, offering North Belfast residents and others a unique opportunity to 'earn while you learn' and become a vital part of shaping our communities.
This joint initiative, spearheaded by Belfast Metropolitan College and several local councils, including , Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Council, and Antrim and Newtownabbey Council, aims to attract fresh talent into the planning sector. It’s a direct response to the need for skilled professionals who can help manage and develop our built environment.
The HLA in Planning offers an incredible package: a full salary from day one, no tuition fees, and no student debt. Participants will gain invaluable hands-on experience working within a council’s Planning team, learning directly from experienced professionals how places and communities are developed and shaped. Alongside this practical experience, apprentices will study for an FdSc in Property, Housing and Planning at Belfast Metropolitan College, with an excellent pathway to progress to Ulster University’s BSc in Planning, Regeneration and Development.
This accessible pathway into a professional career is open to a wide range of applicants, including school leavers, individuals looking for a career change, and anyone with a passion for the built environment and community development. It’s designed to strengthen local skills and create future leaders right here in Northern Ireland.
Councillor Natasha Brennan highlighted the importance of such programmes: "Our council is committed to ensuring everyone fulfils their full potential and increasing apprenticeship opportunities within our own organisation is key to that. Planning as a career is about shaping the places we live and work in, and it plays a vital role in the future of our communities. This apprenticeship offers a fantastic route into a rewarding profession, giving people the chance to gain qualifications, knowledge and experience without the worry of student debt."
Damian Duffy, Interim Principal and CEO of Belfast Metropolitan College, added: "We are proud to play our part in supporting the next generation of planning professionals who will help shape Northern Ireland’s communities for years to come. By combining academic study with practical, hands-on learning, this apprenticeship creates a clear pathway into a professional career in planning, regeneration and development."
Applications for the HLA in Planning opened on Friday 7 November and will close on Friday 21 November. One apprenticeship position is available in each of the four participating councils. For more information and to apply, visit the dedicated jobs portal at /jobs during the application window.
